California's Sierra Nevada Mountains Are Getting Cold

Cold temperatures made a rare visit to California's Sierra Nevada Mountains and left behind snowfall this weekend, officials said.

Mid- and high-elevation areas of California's Sierra Nevada saw snowfall Friday night into Saturday, AccuWeather meteorologist Elizabeth Danco told USA TODAY in an email. On Saturday, portions of Highway 89, which runs through Lassen Volcanic National Park, were closed due to sporadic snowfall.

The National Weather Service estimates that about 3 inches of snow fell in the area.

Despite the cold, the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada will see maximum temperatures of 58 to 73 degrees at higher elevations and 71 to 81 degrees at lower elevations on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

MP records unusual snowfall

“While it is rare to see snow this time of year, it is a reminder of the unpredictable nature of our beautiful Sierra Nevada,” said an article on Madera County Sheriff's Office Facebook page on Saturday.

A deputy took video of snow in eastern Madera County, 33 miles north of Fresno, California, on Saturday and posted it to the sheriff's office Facebook page.

The sheriff's office asked anyone planning to travel through or visit the Minaret Vista area to use caution and “prepare for cold weather.”

Why did it snow in August?

A cold system from the Gulf of Alaska has brought cold weather to the West Coast, ABC 10 reports.

First, Mount Rainier in Washington state got snow, then California saw a dusting of snow on Saturday.
