Kolkata doctor rape case: SIT submits documents to CBI related to RG Kar's financial irregularities

Kolkata doctor rape case: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Saturday handed over all documents related to the alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Hospital to the CBI, ANI reported, citing Kolkata Police.

The development comes a day after the Calcutta High Court transferred the Special Investigation Unit (SIT) into RG Kar's alleged financial irregularities to the CBI.

The Calcutta High Court on Thursday reprimanded the West Bengal government for delaying the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT). During the hearing, the high court asked why it took the government a year to form an SIT after allegations of financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital came to light, PTI reported.

The SIT has been investigating the alleged corruption at the hospital since January 2021, a period that coincides with the tenure of Dr Sandip Ghosh, the former director of the hospital.

Financial irregularities at RG Kar hospital

According to news agency PTI, former deputy director of RG Kar College and Hospital Akhtar Ali had reported Ghosh's alleged financial irregularities to the state authorities in 2023. Later, Ali moved the court seeking an Enforcement Directorate probe against former director Sandip Ghosh for alleged financial irregularities during his tenure there. The state government formed the SIT committee this year.

While hearing the petition, Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj, who is presiding over the case, asked why the SIT was constituted a year after the allegations came to light.

Former RG Kar director Sandip Ghosh joins CBI today

As part of the ongoing CBI probe into the Kolkata doctor rape case, former RG Kar director Sandip Ghosh surrendered at the CBI office in Kolkata on Saturday. The CBI is questioning Ghosh in connection with the rape case. He is also likely to undergo a polygraph test soon as the court has allowed the CBI to continue the proceedings. Besides Sandip Ghosh, five others linked to the case will undergo the polygraph test.

Among the five are four doctors who had dinner with the deceased doctor on the day of the incident, and a civic volunteer. The court has given the CBI three weeks to submit a status report on the investigation, which is due on September 17.
