Texas man held on $1.5 million bail for alleged Marshall County robbery – Grand Forks Herald

MARSHALL COUNTY, Minn. — A McKinney, Texas, man accused of defrauding a Marshall County woman out of $136,000 is being held on $1.5 million bail on two counts of theft.

Mutahir Ahmed Khan, 23, faces up to 20 years in prison for the crimes. However, state guidelines recommend a sentence of between 12 and 23 months for thefts over $5,000.

On Feb. 26, the Marshall County Sheriff's Office was contacted by an officer with the McKinney, Texas, Police Department. The officer said he was working on a fraud case in which a Marshall County woman may be a victim, according to a probable cause statement filed in the case.

The woman told a sheriff's deputy that she had sent a large sum of money to a man in Texas named Mark Sabation because he had access to her Social Security number.

She said she sent two separate packages on August 22, 2023, to two different CVS stores in Texas. Inside the boxes were $100 bills, which were placed in book pages. The cash amount was estimated at $36,000.

The woman said she also purchased $100,000 worth of gold bars online on August 30, 2023, because she was asked to do so. Once she received the gold bars, she was told they would be picked up outside her house on September 1.

When the day came, she received a phone call asking her to bring the gold bars outside and place them in the back seat of a white car parked in front of her residence, the statement said.

Once that was done, the car drove off and she could not see the driver, the woman told law enforcement.

It was later revealed that Khan was the person who allegedly defrauded the woman. He was seen on video picking up the packages at both CVS stores, the statement said.

Khan was arrested by McKinney police on an arrest warrant. He admitted to picking up the packages and said he delivered them to someone, but would not say to whom, the statement said.

Khan allegedly claimed he was forced to collect the packages, despite being paid to do so. He said he collected about 40 packages between August and September 2023, the statement said.

Khan made his first court appearance Tuesday morning, August 13. His next appearance, an omnibus hearing, is scheduled for 9 a.m. on September 10.
