Former Minister Golam Dastagir Detained

Former textiles and jute minister, Awami League leader and Gazi group chairman Golam Dastagir Gazi was arrested early Sunday morning.

Police arrested him in Shantinagar in Dhaka around 2:45 a.m., according to Molla Mohammad Khalid Hossain, the officer-in-charge of Paltan police station.

After his arrest in Pirer Goli, Shantinagar, Gazi was taken to the judicial police office for further questioning. When asked if his arrest was related to any specific case, the office said: “No decision has been taken on this yet.”

Since Awami League president Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and fled the country on August 5 amid a student-led mass movement, many Awami League leaders have gone underground.

In recent days, several former ministers and Awami League leaders have been arrested in connection with the victims of the student movement's anti-discrimination protests and have been remanded in custody for questioning.

Golam Dastagir Gazi, along with Sheikh Hasina, is among 105 suspects charged with the murder of 17-year-old Roman Mia, a tenth-grade student at Naba Kishaloy High School in Narayanganj.

Gazi had been elected as the Awami League candidate for the Narayanganj-1 seat in the 12th parliamentary elections.

After the fall of the government on August 5, a factory of the Gazi group was attacked and looted in the Ruposhi area of Rupganj.
