Teen wearing neo-Nazi bulletproof vest stabs five people in live-streamed stabbing attack: authorities

A teenager wearing a neo-Nazi-style helmet and bulletproof vest randomly stabbed five people near a mosque in Turkey on Monday while livestreaming the attack on social media, according to authorities and local media.

The 18-year-old man, identified as Arda K., broadcast the stabbing on social media using a camera attached to his vest, HaberTurk television reported.

The teenager, who was also wearing goggles, gloves and a half-face mask shaped like a skull, was arrested following a police chase. Turkey’s interior minister released a video of the suspect being thrown into the back of a police vehicle. The suspect’s bulletproof vest bore the “black sun” symbol, a symbol originating in Nazi Germany and used by neo-Nazis.

The victims were relaxing in an outdoor cafe after prayers at a mosque in Eskisehir, in northern Turkey, about 230 kilometres (140 miles) west of the capital Ankara.

Video of the attack circulated on X on Tuesday and shows several men screaming after being stabbed. Most of the victims appeared to be elderly men and were attacked from behind.

Other footage circulated online shows men and police officers standing over the suspect after his arrest.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said an investigation had been opened, while HaberTurk and other media reported that the attacker was allegedly influenced by a video game and had dressed like a video game character.
