Fresno man killed by police car theft squad identified

The carjacking suspect killed in an officer-involved shooting on Aug. 20 was Angel Rojas, 39, of Fresno, according to the Fresno Police Department.

Rojas was driving a stolen vehicle when officers with the Help Eliminate Auto Theft Team, a multi-agency task force of the California Highway Patrol and the Fresno County Sheriff's Department, attempted to stop him.

During the incident, Rojas allegedly rammed two law enforcement vehicles, prompting officers to open fire. Investigators later found a loaded firearm on the driver's side floorboard of the stolen vehicle.

Rojas, who was on probation and wanted for violating his probation, had a lengthy criminal record, including carjacking, grand theft auto and evading police. He died of his injuries on Friday, Aug. 30.

The Fresno Police Department is investigating the shooting and the Fresno County District Attorney's Office is conducting an independent investigation.
