A wave of armed burglaries targets several businesses in the St. Louis area, a teenager charged

ST. LOUIS – A teenager is facing criminal charges in a series of burglaries that targeted businesses across the city and St. Louis County, mostly in April.

Prosecutors with the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office charged Mekel Walker, 18, with five counts of theft, eight of first-degree burglary and six of first-degree criminal damage to property. All but two of the offenses were classified as felonies.

Walker is accused of a series of burglaries on April 27, 28 and June 11 in the city and county of St. Louis while he was “armed with firearms” and acting with others, documents show court documents obtained by FOX 2.

The group allegedly stole $750 in cash or merchandise from at least five businesses between April 27 and 28, including four businesses on Delmar Boulevard. The group allegedly tried to use a crowbar to force open the doors of a business, without success, and broke the windows to enter and rob several other businesses. Surveillance cameras captured all reported incidents.

On June 11, Walker and others smashed the windows of two other St. Louis businesses, making off with more than $750 in cash or merchandise from the two businesses.

An arrest warrant was requested for Walker and a judge ordered no bail during his arrest. Court documents do not indicate whether he is behind bars.

At this point, prosecutors have not filed charges against Walker in St. Louis County or anyone else believed to be involved in the burglary spree, according to Missouri court records.
