Corrections Officer Stabbed at Kent Institution in Agassiz

A correctional officer at Kent Institution is recovering from a stab wound sustained during an incident at the maximum security facility in the Agassiz area on Sunday, September 1.

Union of Canadian Correctional Officers regional president John Randle said the officer was breaking up a fight when he was stabbed; the officer was providing medical care to a victim at the time of the incident.

Agassiz RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Andy Lot said the incident is under investigation and, as with all assaults on a correctional officer, charges are being recommended against the suspect. Lot said the officer was sent to hospital after being stabbed in the arm and has since been released.

“He should make a full recovery,” Lot said. The Observer.

Because the weapon had just been used to attack an inmate when the officer was stabbed, Randle confirmed that the officer was undergoing “the cocktail,” a medical treatment plan used when a person comes into contact with objects that may be contaminated.

The Observer contacted Correctional Service Canada for comment.
