Officer involved in Scottie Scheffler's arrest accused of stealing thousands of dollars from suspect

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE/Gray News) – The officer who allegedly didn't turn on his body camera during the arrest of professional golfer Scottie Scheffler has been arrested after allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from a suspect.

Louisville Metro Police Officer Javar Downs was searching a man during a traffic stop and seized an envelope containing about $10,000 in cash just after midnight Wednesday.

The man reported that Downs took about $4,000 of that money and submitted the rest as evidence to the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections.

According to a subpoena, Downs was arrested at LMDC on charges of theft and misconduct in office.

Downs is charged with theft by unlawful taking over $1,000 and official misconduct.

Louisville Police Chief Humphrey has suspended Downs on an emergency basis, limited his police powers and begun the process of terminating his employment.

In May, Downs was the officer who arrested Scheffler during the morning of the second round of the PGA Championship at Valhalla in Louisville, Kentucky.

Scheffler was charged with second-degree assault on a police officer, reckless driving, third-degree criminal mischief and failure to obey the traffic signals of a police officer directing traffic.

All charges were dropped.
