Arson Identified as Cause of Fire Chief's Bandstand Fire

NORRISTOWN – The Norristown Fire Department has confirmed that the fire at the Fire Chief's Memorial Bandstand in Elmwood Park was intentionally set.

The Pennsylvania State Police Fire Department, Norristown Fire Department and Norristown Police Department worked to investigate the fire that destroyed the nearly 100-year-old outdoor performance venue in the early morning hours of Aug. 28.

The Norristown Fire Department was dispatched to the scene at 1:40 a.m. for a report of a building fire. Investigators report the fire started near a portable toilet located at the rear of the bandstand structure. The fire traveled up the back of the bandstand, eventually penetrating the interior structure and engulfing the roof. The two-alarm fire was deemed under control after 3 a.m. No injuries were reported. The extensive damage to the bandstand caused the structure to be condemned by city officials and is fenced off to park visitors.

The investigation is currently underway by the Norristown Police Department to locate the person(s) responsible for the fire. Anyone with information on those involved is encouraged to contact the Norristown Police Department at 610-270-0977.

City Council President Tom Lepera and City Administrator Leonard Lightner have pledged to rebuild the bandstand as soon as possible.

The Bandstand is a fixture in Elmwood Park and throughout the Norristown community. The outdoor venue hosts the summer concert series, Movie Nights in the Park screenings, Fourth of July celebrations and other community events throughout the year.
