Selma teen who 'showed so much potential' dies after being shot in the head

A Selma High School student has died after being shot in the head last week.

Au'Terrious Walter, 16, died at UAB Hospital surrounded by his family, Dallas County Coroner Alan Dailey said. His death was ruled a homicide.

“This is a difficult time for all of us as we deal with this loss,” Superintendent Zickeyous Byrd said in a statement. “This young man showed so much potential and his absence leaves a void that will be felt by many.”

Au'Terrious was one of two Selma teenagers who died over the weekend.

Caden Tellier, the 16-year-old quarterback from Morgan Academy, was airlifted to UAB after being injured in the third quarter Friday night. His family announced his death via social media Saturday.

Au'Terrious was shot shortly after 9:30 p.m. Wednesday on Citizens Parkway in Selma. He was taken to Vaughn Regional Medical Center in Selma and then flown to UAB in Birmingham where he died Friday.

No further details regarding the shooting have been released and no arrests have been announced.

Byrd said counselors will be available at the school this week.

“In the days ahead, it is crucial that we come together as a community to support one another and honor the memory of this bright and promising 16-year-old sophomore,” the superintendent said. “His loss is a profound tragedy for this entire school community.”

Byrd asked that the family's privacy be respected. “As we go through this difficult time,” he said, “let us remember this young man and keep his spirit alive in our hearts.”
