Evacuations ordered after new fire along Juab-Tooele County border

Evacuations have been ordered after a new fire broke out near the Juab-Tooele county line.

The Boulter Fire, located along SR-36, has grown to more than 3,000 acres and is growing with strong, erratic winds, Utah Fire Info said.

The fire is estimated to be about 8 miles from 5 Mile Pass and is moving quickly. A wind shift from the west is believed to have moved the fire toward the Tintic Mountain Range north of Eureka.

SR-36 was closed in both directions at mile marker 9, three miles from the county line. Additionally, the Utah County Sheriff's Office recommended avoiding SR-73 at the Utah-Tooele County border.

Evacuations have been ordered between Vernon and Eureka, as well as Five Mile Pass.

Several ground resources are present on the scene and others have been dispatched.

Strong winds are bringing smoke to Salt Lake City and surrounding communities, the Salt Lake City Police Department said.

“Do not call 9-1-1 to inquire about smoke in the air. Save 9-1-1 for true emergencies, such as when you see smoke or a fire,” the police department said. “If you are concerned about smelling smoke and still want to report it, consider first checking local media reports for any fires or incidents nearby, then call our non-emergency line at 801-799-3000.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
