Greensboro man suspected of attempting to assassinate Trump

The man arrested by federal authorities after the alleged assassination attempt on former President Donald J. Trump in Florida Sunday afternoon has a Greensboro address and was involved in a three-hour armed standoff with police more than 20 years ago in Greensboro.

In 2002, Ryan Wesley Routh, now 58, wielded a machine gun and barricaded himself inside the United Roofing Company on the former Lee Street.

He was eventually charged with carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a weapon of mass destruction in that case.

Many utility directories list Routh's address as 3155 Spring Garden St. Ste. 300, Greensboro, with another address listed as 2106 Hiatt St., Greensboro. His former addresses include Ballwin, Missouri, and Honolulu, according to several search engines.

On his X account, his profile includes the following message: “I feel lucky to have been born in America, with freedom and opportunity and the hope of not wasting such a precious thing; of doing more and taking less.”

His Facebook page, which was still active Sunday evening, had very few photos posted but did feature images of a slate gray van that appeared to be Routh's.

It remains unclear what type of vehicle Routh was driving when authorities apprehended him on I-95 after fleeing the Trump International Golf Course.
