Prosecutors say Milwaukee teen charged in Juneteenth shooting also shot and killed 9-year-old a week earlier

Prosecutors say a Milwaukee teenager shot and killed a 9-year-old boy while trying to shoot another teen, whom he fatally shot a week later after a Juneteenth festival.

Damarion Glenn, 17, is charged with first-degree manslaughter for the June 13 shooting of Milwaukee boy Jonael Zambrano, according to a criminal complaint filed Friday. He is also charged with first-degree intentional homicide for the June 19 shooting of Sherrone D. Thornton Jr.

Christian Hubanks, 16, is also charged with first-degree manslaughter in Zambrano's death. Hubanks is not charged in Thornton's murder.

The Milwaukee County District Attorney's criminal complaint links the two incidents through Glenn.

The latter occurred after the Juneteenth Peace Day MKE in Washington Park on June 19. Organizers were criticized for their handling of the event, which they ended early, but defended their actions and city officials largely supported the handling of the event.

The June 13 shooting occurred at a condominium complex in the 9000 block of North Swan Road. Zambrano died after being taken to hospital in critical condition.

The district attorney's office alleges in its criminal complaint that Hubanks and Glenn sought to shoot up Thornton's home in the condo complex after he talked “crazy” about them. Prosecutors believe Hubanks and Glenn opened fire on the wrong home.

The two men fired at least 11 shots into an apartment and killed the boy, who had just finished his third year at Greater Holy Temple Christian Academy the day he died. In an interview with police on Aug. 14, Hubanks told authorities that he and Glenn fired shots into Zambrano's residence, according to the complaint.

An earlier police interview from July 16 is also cited in the document.

A person identified by the initials “MAM” told police that Glenn and Hubanks admitted to shooting at the Zambrano home. MAM told police that Hubanks felt “sick to his stomach” after learning what had happened.

During the August 14 police interview, Hubanks told police he knew Glenn had joined 15-year-old Noah Shotwell in the shooting of Thornton Jr.

Shotwell was charged in late June with first-degree manslaughter as an accessory to a crime in Thornton's shooting death, telling police, “I had a gun. I fired the gun.”

Shotwell later told police that Glenn was the person who shot and killed Thornton that day, with Shotwell seen on police drone footage shooting the victim second, according to the complaint.

Glenn and Hubanks are also charged with first-degree recklessly endangering public safety as accessories to a felony.

An arrest warrant was issued for Glenn on Monday. He was not in custody Tuesday evening.

Meanwhile, Hubanks will have a preliminary hearing on August 28. His bail has been set at $300,000.

Onterio Girley, 17, also faces multiple charges related to the Juneteenth shooting, including first-degree trespassing for allegedly firing the shots that injured Shotwell in retaliation for Thornton Jr.’s shooting, authorities said. Girley’s next court appearance is Sept. 5 for a scheduling conference.

Shotwell will appear in court again for a preliminary hearing on Thursday.
