Louisiana authorities respond to attempted assassination of Donald Trump

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is safe after gunfire near his Florida golf course, his campaign and the U.S. Secret Service said Sunday. It was the second assassination of the former president in two months, and a suspect is in custody.

The man in custody is Ryan Wesley Routh, according to three media reports, citing multiple unidentified law enforcement sources who said Routh pointed a rifle with a scope at Trump's Mar-a-Lago golf club.

Louisiana officials responded to the incident on social media.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise

Republican House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana condemned the violence. “I can’t believe I have to say it again this election cycle: There is absolutely no place for violence in politics,” Scalise wrote on X.

U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy

Louisiana Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy praised the Secret Service and law enforcement.

“With the reporting of the threat to President Trump’s life, we can appreciate the courage of Secret Service agents and other law enforcement officers and pray for the safety of President Trump and all Americans,” Cassidy posted on X.
