Michigan doctor accused of secretly filming naked women and children

A Michigan doctor accused of secretly recording naked women and children was charged with multiple crimes Tuesday after authorities discovered illicit photos and videos.

According to the Associated Press (AP), Dr. Oumair Aejaz, 40, was arrested at his Rochester Hills home on August 8, following a search that revealed photos and videos, which had been taken at various locations in the Detroit area.

Aejaz, who specializes in internal medicine, was charged with one count of child sexual abuse, four counts of capturing an image of an unclothed person and five counts of using a computer to commit a crime, the AP reported.

According to Oakland County District Attorney Karen McDonald, the charges primarily relate to footage taken at an Oakland County children's swim school, where Aejaz allegedly filmed a 2-year-old, a 4-year-old and two women from a nearby locker room.

Newsweek contacted the Oakland County District Attorney's Office by email Tuesday for comment.

At a press conference Tuesday, McDonald revealed that the investigation began after Aejaz's wife provided authorities with disturbing documents on August 13. That led to a new raid on the doctor's home, where investigators seized six computers, four cellphones and 15 external storage devices, including a hard drive containing 13,000 videos.

“On August 13, the defendant’s wife came forward with some disturbing documents,” McDonald said. “The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office immediately executed a search warrant and confiscated additional devices and have been sifting through some truly shocking and alarming images, and they continue to do so.”

County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said the case is similar to that of Larry Nassar, the former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University doctor who was sentenced in 2018 to decades in prison for sexually abusing girls and women under the guise of medical treatment.

Bouchard expressed concern about the scale of Aejaz's alleged crimes, which involve victims ranging from toddlers to unconscious women in hospital beds.

“There is no particular category,” Bouchard said. “It's not just children, it's not just women, it's not just men. It goes from a two-year-old child to an adult woman. The victimization is so vast and the perversion is so great that we're only just beginning to understand it.”

He added: “It's hard to watch the videos of this activity where a woman is practically unconscious in a hospital bed, and he rapes her. To a 2-year-old child, thinking he's going to have a nice day swimming, and he's filmed naked.”

According to Bouchard, Aejaz, originally from India, came to the United States in 2011 for an internship in Michigan before moving to Alabama in 2018 and later returning to Oakland County. He worked as a contract physician at several hospitals in southeast Michigan, rather than having his own practice.

That has led authorities to suspect there may be more victims, potentially beyond Michigan and even the United States, with crimes that could date back at least six years.

“It's concerning on many levels,” Bouchard said, noting that the investigation could take months to complete given the volume of documents investigators will have to review. “This could expand, not just in Michigan, but to other states and possibly even other countries.”

Aejaz is currently being held in the Oakland County Jail with bail set at $2 million.
