Vacuum cleaner maker Dyson produces MUSHROOM-based hair serum that can 'tame unruly hair'

Mushrooms aren't just for the kitchen, as they seem to be a secret weapon against unruly hair.

Tech company Dyson, known for its bagless vacuum cleaners and bladeless fans, came up with the idea as it enters the beauty market.

It uses fungal chitosan, derived from the cell walls of oyster mushrooms, as the active ingredient in the hair serum.

Researchers have found that chitosan, already popular in skin care, can also tame frizzy hair.

Each bottle of the product, which is named after its star ingredient, contains the equivalent of eight oyster mushrooms. Chitosan will be available in Dyson stores and online from tomorrow, priced at £50.

The substance creates bonds that support each strand individually, providing users with a “delicate yet strong” flexible hold.

Company founder Sir James Dyson told the Guardian: “The complex macromolecule helps create flexible bonds that support hair strand by strand, for twice as long hold, with movement and shine.”

The company has branched out into hair care with the Supersonic hair dryer and Airwrap styling tool, and it's not alone in its focus on mushrooms, with mushroom-based products more common in the health and beauty sectors.
