The shooter, who was firing a rifle with a scope, was 300-500 meters from Trump.

PALM BEACH COUNTY, FLORIDA – Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said a gunman armed with a rifle with a scope was 300 to 500 yards away when he shot former President Donald Trump Sunday at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach.

At a news conference at a nearby public library, Bradshaw said a U.S. Secret Service agent saw the barrel of the gun and returned fire. The FBI said the shooting appeared to be an assassination attempt on Trump.

“He was in a bushy area,” Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said of the shooter's location.

Bradshaw said a witness told Palm Beach police the suspect came out of the bushes and fled in a black Nissan SUV. The witness took a photo of the SUV with the tag.

Before the news conference, Martin County Sheriff William D. Snyder said officers stopped the suspect west of Interstate 95 near Palm City after the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office issued a BOLO alert for the vehicle. Florida Highway Patrol officers closed northbound I-95.

Sunday's shooting came about two months after the U.S. Secret Service killed a man who also fired a rifle in an assassination attempt on Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania. The bullet grazed Trump's ear.

Bradshaw said deputies seized the gun, two backpacks and a GoPro camera that the shooter left behind near the chain-link fence of the golf club in West Palm Beach.

The FBI is the lead agency in the Palm Beach shooting investigation and agents asked anyone with information to visit this site to submit a tip or call 1-800-225-5324.
