Haysville man arrested after seven-hour standoff in which shots were fired at deputies

A 43-year-old Haysville man surrendered to law enforcement after an hours-long standoff in which he allegedly shot at officers executing an arrest warrant at his home Wednesday.

The man was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail at 3:08 a.m. Thursday on suspicion of three counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, according to jail inmate records.

A team of six officers from the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office served the warrant at 1:20 p.m. at the man's home in the 8100 block of South Bernice in Haysville. The warrant was for failure to appear and contempt of court following an incident in which the man was accused of threatening to shoot bail bondsmen as they attempted to arrest him.

Deputies interviewed neighbors and learned the man was home alone, WPD Chief Joe Sullivan said at a news conference Thursday.

They asked a Haysville police K-9 to determine what room the man was in. They found he was locked in a bedroom.

At 3:48 p.m., three officers broke a bedroom window and prepared to throw chemical munitions inside.

The man allegedly shot multiple times at deputies, according to a WPD news release.

Two officers returned fire, one firing three shots and the other five. No one was injured in the shooting, Sullivan said.

The SWAT team and crisis negotiators were called at 4:03 p.m. and reached the man by phone at 4:41 p.m.

“Throughout the seven hours of negotiations that followed, [the suspect] “He made several statements that this was his ‘last stand’ and that he would shoot officers if they entered the home,” according to the WPD press release.

At 9:01 p.m., chemical munitions were thrown inside the home and SWAT officers heard gunshots. As another round of chemical munitions was being prepared, the man exited the home and surrendered at 11:33 p.m.

Wichita police are investigating the incident because it involved deputies from the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office.

The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office to determine what charges will be filed.
