Meridian City Councilman Speaks Out Following Recent Shooting of Elderly Couple

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) – Councilman Davis spoke out Sunday regarding the recent shooting of the elderly couple in the 1600 block of 37th Avenue.

As kids head back to school and summer draws to a close, crime in the city has increased slightly; from home and car break-ins to late-night shootings, Meridian citizens are wondering about their safety in the Queen City.

Wednesday night's shooting killed 73-year-old John Davis and left his wife in critical condition.

Councilor Davis explains why Meridian citizens can feel safe.

“They can feel safe here in Meridian. One thing is for sure, everyone should know that our Meridian Police Department and our Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department are doing their best here in the county and the city to do what they need to do to keep our city safe. I also need to say that we need to pray for our Meridian Police Department and our Sheriff’s Department because they put their lives on the line when they go out and protect the citizens here in Meridian and Lauderdale County,” said Ward 2 Councilman Dewayne Davis.

Councilor Davis also talks about what the city has in place for your safety.

“Meridian is a city where we were not used to having crime as prevalent as it is today, but we have put measures in place to deter it. We are going to build a real-time crime detection center, with real-time crime detection cameras, that will allow the police to see what is happening before the police arrive. So there will be things in Meridian, not just shootings or violent crimes, but also robberies and damage to other people’s property. So crime is a problem, and that is very important to me. The first thing on the list is what we need to take care of. At the same time, we can move forward and become one city,” Davis said.

Councilor Davis would like to express his thoughts, prayers and condolences to the family as they go through this difficult time.
