Local news

No one was injured, according to firefighters.

Lightning during a severe thunderstorm sparked a house fire in East Sandwich Monday afternoon, fire officials said.

The Sandwich Fire Department responded to the report of a fire at 17 Mill Road around 12:55 p.m., according to a news release.

“The fire was caused by lightning during a violent storm that passed through the city,” the department said.

According to authorities, the occupants of the house were able to get out of the house with their dog, helped by their neighbors, and reported the fire. Damage from the fire was limited to the exterior of the house and electrical components inside.

A second house across the road suffered minor electrical damage from lightning, fire officials said.

No one was injured.

Severe storms swept across southern New England on Monday, dropping golf-ball-sized hail in some places, according to the National Weather Service.
