Queensland man dies after skydiving accident near Goondiwindi

A 25-year-old man has died after a skydiving accident on Queensland's southern border.

Emergency crews were called to a rural area of Tarawera, near Goondiwindi, about 8am on Tuesday.

The Australian Parachuting Federation (APF), which is investigating the death, said the man from Scarborough, north of Brisbane, was an experienced skydiver.

“[He had] “I have completed more than 600 jumps since I started this adventure sport in 2022,” the federation said.

The APF said the man had attempted a group jump during an event for experienced skydivers.

She said she believed the man's parachute opened and operated normally, but he landed badly and suffered multiple serious injuries.

Four other parachutists landed safely.

The APF said first aid was administered to the man but he could not be saved.

APF CEO Stephen Porter said the man, whose identity has not yet been released by police, had grown up in the skydiving community.

“Our thoughts are with the young man’s family, who have been part of the skydiving community for many years, and we offer our condolences at this sad time,” Mr Porter said.

Mr Porter said an AFP security official was travelling to the scene to launch a thorough investigation to understand the cause of the incident and improve security measures in the future.

The Queensland Police Forensic Accident Unit is also investigating.
