FBI investigating alleged assassination attempt on Trump after golf course shooting

Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle took to X to praise the Secret Service and condemn political violence following the second assassination attempt on Trump today.

Senate Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell called for a “thorough, swift and transparent” investigation by the FBI and Secret Service in a message, saying he was “very grateful that President Trump is safe after yet another assassination attempt. There is no place for political violence in our country, and those responsible for this violence must be held accountable.”

Republican House Majority Leader Steve Scalise wrote on X that he was grateful to all law enforcement officers involved, who he said prevented a “catastrophe,” adding, “I can’t believe I have to say it again this election cycle: There is absolutely no place for violence in politics.”

Rep. James Comer, R-Kentucky, also thanked “the brave Secret Service agents and local law enforcement officers in Florida” on X and called on Republicans and Democrats to “stand united against extremism and political violence of any kind.”

Rep. Adam Schiff, a California Democrat, said he was “saddened” to learn of the attempt and “glad” to hear that Trump was safe.

“This madness must stop,” Schiff said. “Violence is not the answer to our political differences.”

Representative Ruben Gallego, Democrat of Arizona, a Democratic candidate for the state Senate, condemned the attack “in the strongest possible terms.”

“Violence has no place in our democracy,” Gallego wrote. “The recent shootings against Donald Trump are unacceptable and disturbing.”

Independent Senator Angus King of Maine also called any form of political violence “wrong” and contrary to “the fundamental American values ​​that we believe in.”
