Facebook page helps ranchers affected by wildfires in Wyoming

RAPID CITY, SD (KOTA) – Who says social media isn't effective in mobilizing a good cause?

The Facebook page “Wyoming Rancher Fire Relief” was created to help ranchers who have been impacted by wildfires replenish their hay and fence supply.

Ten days ago, Wyoming native Kylie Scott-Kocher launched the page after wildfires broke out in Gillette and Buffalo.

The idea is to raise money and coordinate moving hay and fencing supplies from other states that want to donate these items to ranchers in the affected fire areas.

Scott-Kocher says the page has received $100,000 thus far and expects to receive more in the future.

They have also received more than 55 bales of hay that have come from donors in Western South Dakota, Colorado and Indiana.

Scott-Kocher has been humbled by the mobilization effort.

”It's been a pretty humbling experience for me. People say 'I saw a load of hay coming through town headed out to the fire'. It’s just, it’s very cool to see people rally around their neighbors,” Scott-Kocher said.

She adds they will use the monetary donations to buy truckloads of hay and find truckers to haul them.
