The Spokane Street Bridge was closed after a car crashed into the safety barrier while it was being raised

A man has been arrested after crashing a car through warning barriers and hitting the safety barrier on the Spokane Street elevated bridge.

Around 7:01 p.m. Saturday, the Seattle Fire Department responded to calls about a car crash on the lower Spokane Street Bridge near Spokane Street and 11th Avenue SW.

When emergency services arrived, they found two people trapped in the car after it hit the safety barrier that was preventing the car from overturning.

When Seattle police arrived, they found a car that had crossed into the opposite lane, hit the warning barriers as the bridge opened and stopped after hitting the guardrail.

Police said the driver was speeding before the crash as the bridge swayed.

Seattle firefighters removed the passenger, a 21-year-old woman, from the car and treated her for possible internal injuries, police said.

The woman was later taken to Harborview Medical Center in stable condition.

During the extraction, Seattle firefighters found a loaded 9mm Glock 45 pistol inside the car belonging to the driver and turned it over to officers.

Police said the driver showed signs of impairment and was arrested.

The driver, a 25-year-old Seattle man, was taken to Harborview Medical Center for his injuries while police sought a warrant to test his blood for intoxication.

The officer who intervened wrote in his report: “[the driver] “He became very aggressive and aggressive towards the staff. It took 6 security guards to subdue him…”

After the arrest warrant was approved, medical personnel took a blood sample for police. Police then transferred the suspect to hospital for further treatment.

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) closed the bridge to give electricians and mechanics time to inspect and repair damage to the bridge.

Twenty-four hours later, SDOT informed drivers that the bridge remained closed except to pedestrian and bicyclist traffic.

SDOT does not have an estimate of how long it will take to reopen the bridge, but said repairs to the bridge are ongoing.
