Two-year improvement project underway near Rattlesnake Pass in Marana

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Twin Peaks Road near Rattlesnake Pass is under construction and will remain so for the next couple years.

Right now, they're in Phase 1 of a four-phase project.

They're doing this on a nearly two-mile stretch of road in order to add some much-needed storm drainage. Tom Houle with the Town of Marana told 13 News drainage is a priority for the roadway.

“Every time it would rain heavy, our public works street guys would have to actually shut Twin Peaks down because it was unacceptable,” said Houle.

The company working with Marana, Hunter Contracting is working to set up those drainage structures.

Phase I is expected to wrap up in a year, with the other three phases set for completion the following year.

Phase II will improve the intersection at Twin Peaks and Silverbell and Phase III, which will see the full closure of Rattlesnake Pass, will widen Twin Peaks from two lanes to four. That means you can expect to see some detours.

“There's just no room to put traffic, so right now the plan is to shut it down for three months while we at least get the road built,” said Houle. “You'll be able to take that Silverbell Run and go past Twin Peaks and up over the hill and come in the back side off of Lambert Lane.”

That's not expected to happen until early 2026, with Phase IV adding improvements to the turnoff near Silverbell and Twin Peaks.

Houle said this is happening because of growth in the area.

“It was really based on how many building permits Saguaro Bloom generated, so they had a development agreement in place with the town that once they hit a certain threshold in the amount of building permits, that would warrant widening the road,” he said.

They'll also be adding traffic signals at Twin Peaks and Saguaro Peaks, curbs and sidewalks on both sides, and landscaping.

Overall, construction is expected to cost about $35 million with DR Horton picking up about $14 million. A majority of the rest comes from transportation funds.

The project is expected to be completed by August 2026.
