Two trucks collide near Santa Clara-San Benito county line, leaving driver dead

SANTA CLARA COUNTY — A San Jose man was killed and another suffered serious injuries when their big-rig trucks collided head-on Monday morning near the Santa Clara-San Benito county line, authorities said.

The fatal crash happened shortly before 10 a.m. on Interstate 25 south of Bolsa Road, the California Highway Patrol said in a news release.

A 70-year-old man was traveling northbound in a 2017 Freightliner Cascadia at about 60 mph when he crossed the double solid yellow lines and collided with a 68-year-old man traveling southbound in a 2022 Mack Anthem at about 40 mph, according to the CHP.

The two large trucks came to a stop on the west shoulder, their trailers blocking the southbound lane.

The 68-year-old man suffered fatal injuries in the crash. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner and Coroner's Office will release his identity once it is confirmed and his next of kin have been notified.

The 70-year-old man was thrown from the Freightliner and suffered serious injuries. He was transported to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center for treatment.

Neither alcohol nor drugs played a role in the collision, the CHP said.
