Man charged with murder after delivery driver dies in suspected van robbery

A man has been charged with murder after a parcel delivery driver was killed during an alleged robbery of a van.

Mark Ross, 32, of Armley, is due to appear in court Leeds District court Friday morning.

Claudiu-Carol Kondor, 42, from Sheffield, was pronounced dead at the scene in Heights Drive, Wortley, on Tuesday evening after his silver Ford Transit Cargo van was stolen from Alliance Street while he was making a delivery.

Police said a 24-year-old man arrested on Thursday on suspicion of murder remains in custody.

A woman, arrested at the same time on suspicion of aiding an offender, has been released under investigation.

Mr Kondor reportedly delivered a package for Amazon and returned to his van to find a man apparently trying to rob him around 6:45 p.m.

As he attempted to stop the alleged robbery, the van sped off with the victim partially trapped in the passenger door of the vehicle.

The van then hit two parked cars and sped off, leaving Mr Kondor injured in the street.

Police were called to the scene five minutes later and found the delivery driver unconscious, with members of the public trying to help him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr. Kondor was not an Amazon employee, but worked for a company contracted to make their deliveries.

A GoFundMe campaign launched for his family has already raised more than £20,000.

The page was created by SP Transport Group operations director Mike Neill, who wrote: “This unimaginable loss has devastated us all.

“Claudiu was more than just a colleague: he was a friend, a confidant and a valued member of our team.

“His commitment to his work and the camaraderie he brought to the workplace will never be forgotten.”
