Victims of Georgia school shooting

Tributes are now pouring in for the four victims killed in a mass shooting at a Georgia high school.

Two students and two teachers died in “senseless” violence after a gunman opened fire at Apalachee High School in Winder Wednesday morning.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has now identified the victims as Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14, and teachers Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Christina Irimie, 53.

At least nine other people were also injured in the attack and are expected to make full recoveries, authorities said.

Law enforcement identified the suspected shooter Wednesday night as Colt Gray, a 14-year-old student at the school who surrendered to authorities at the scene. He will be charged with murder and tried as an adult, authorities said.

As family, friends and the community reel from the shooting, loved ones pay tribute to the victims.

Here's what we know about them so far:

Christian Angulo

Angulo was described by friends and family as “a beautiful soul” who was “loved by so many.”

His sister, Lisette Angulo, shared the family's grief and shock over his death in a GoFundMe.

“Unfortunately, my little brother was one of the victims of the Apalachee High School shooting,” she confirmed.

“He was only 14 years old. He was a very good boy, very kind and very caring. He was so loved by so many. His loss was so sudden and unexpected. We are truly heartbroken. He really didn’t deserve this.”

The 14-year-old's family is raising money to cover the cost of his funeral.

“We ask that you please help us by making a donation to help us cover the costs of his funeral service due to his sudden loss. We would appreciate anything you can give. We would also appreciate your prayers at this time,” she said.

Ivonne Lizbeth Infante, who said Angulo was her boyfriend's nephew, also paid tribute to the teenager on Facebook, calling him a “very nice young man” and “very kind.”

“I always loved having him around with his family and our weekends at Costco,” she wrote on Facebook.

“He loved playing with our little girl. I will always be grateful for the love he showed us and the time he spent with us. He didn’t deserve this, none of them deserved this.”

Mason Schermerhorn

As news of the shooting spread Wednesday, Schermerhorn's desperate family circulated his photo on social media as they tried to get in touch with him.

The teenager was autistic and his family asked anyone who found him to “speak calmly”. They wrote: “Let him know his mother is looking for him to reassure him.”

Sadly, the family later confirmed that Schermerhorn was one of the victims killed in the shooting.

His sister shared a photo of him on social media and said: “Thanks to everyone who shared. Unfortunately my brother did not make it out of school alive.”

Family friend Doug Kilburn said Georgia-victims-of-shootings-in-a-school.html”>The New York Times that the teenager “really enjoyed life” and “always had an optimistic attitude about everything.”

He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing video games, telling jokes and taking trips to Walt Disney World, the newspaper reported.

Richard Aspinwall

Aspinwall was a 39-year-old math teacher at the school as well as the defensive coordinator of the football team, the school's website reveals.

He was also a father, according to information posted on social media.

One person who knew him commented: “A senseless tragedy! One of my sons [sic] “He is man’s best friend and he has a wonderful family. What is wrong with this world? I pray for his beautiful family and friends.”

Christina Irimie

Irimie, 53, was also a maths teacher at the school.

She was described as “an amazing teacher” by a friend in a Facebook post.

“Christina Irimie was an incredible teacher. I feel blessed to have known her, but she went to her school today to teach math because she was so good at it, and she will never return home to her family and friends,” the friend wrote.

“Do something for Ms. Irimie… Do something for our children AND for the teachers and staff who care so much about them.”

GBI Director Chris Hosey praised school staff yesterday and said the actions taken helped prevent the shooting from becoming a much larger tragedy.

“The heroes we need to remember are our teachers and staff here at this school,” he said.

“They acted admirably. They were heroes in the actions that they took. The protocols that were put in place in that school and in that system prevented this tragedy from being much worse than the one we experienced today. So I want to pay tribute to them.”
