Details of Georgia high school shooting emerge, Israel-Hamas ceasefire deal advances, football season begins

Four people were killed and nine injured yesterday in a shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, the deadliest of 45 school shootings in the United States this year.

Please note: The alleged shooter, a 14-year-old student at the school, is and will be tried for murder as an adult. Local schools will be closed this week while the investigation unfolds. [Yahoo News]

The victims: Students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, as well as math teachers Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie, were killed in the attack. The injured were taken to hospital and are expected to recover. [CNN]

First signs: Last year, local law enforcement questioned the suspected shooter about a school shooting that included photos of guns. The suspect denied any involvement at the time. [NBC News]

Progress in the ceasefire agreement

Israel and Hamas have reportedly signed 90% of the ceasefire agreement. It is up to them to decide who will control a buffer zone on the Gaza-Egypt border and who will participate in a hostage and prisoner exchange. [USA Today/Reuters]

The Justice Department has indicted two Russian state media employees for allegedly funding a U.S. media company that paid people, including Benny Johnson, to spread disinformation ahead of the November election. [Time]

The Labor Department reported that there were 7.7 million job openings in July, the lowest number since January 2021. The report shows that there is still at least one unemployed person. [AP]
