Case registered after woman converted to Hinduism, married foreigner in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar: Police have registered a case after a woman from Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district went missing and later allegedly converted to Hinduism to marry a non-local man, an official said on Saturday.

A police official said that the Kreeri police station in north Kashmir's district had filed a report after a complainant claimed that his daughter had been missing since the morning of August 16.

“On Friday, it came to light that on August 19, the said girl converted and married Sagar Pradeep Singh of Navi Mumbai (other details withheld),” the police official said, adding that a case of kidnapping had been registered in the concerned sections of the BNS.

However, he said, the cyber patrol unit of the police has noticed that many miscreants and anti-social elements are creating/sharing messages trying to use this incident to cause trouble.

Sharing misleading or provocative content violates various laws and will result in strict legal action, including the initiation of criminal proceedings, he said.

“All are advised not to share any misleading/inflammatory content on this incident. If any such content has been shared/reposted, it is advised to delete it,” the police said.
