Ukrainian drones destroy nearly 5,000 tons of Russian weapons | World | News

An overnight attack by a Ukrainian drone triggered a massive explosion in Russia after detonating an ammunition depot.

The attack destroyed a depot in the Voronezh region that contained more than 5,000 tons of American weapons. The attack was later confirmed by the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.

Shocking footage of the attack shows a huge cloud of dust rising into the air as a fire rages at the military storage depot.

Regional Governor Aleksandr Gusev confirmed that a drone strike caused a fire and “detonation of explosive objects.” No casualties were reported as a result of the attack. At least five drones are believed to have been involved in the attack.

Mr Gusev initially blamed the blast on fragments of destroyed Ukrainian drones, but videos of the attack suggested it was a direct hit.

He posted on Telegram: “Air defense and electronic warfare systems destroyed and jammed several drones in Voronezh Oblast.

“A fire broke out as a result of the debris falling, causing the detonation of explosive objects. No new casualties or damage to civilian buildings have been reported so far.”

Mr Gusev declared a state of emergency in three villages near the warehouse, while nearby highways were closed.

According to Ukrainian military intelligence, the ammunition depot belonged to the Western Group of Troops of the Russian Army.

Ukrainian defense intelligence said the Russians had stored artillery and tank shells, as well as ammunition for small arms and surface-to-air missiles inside the military facility.

War is Translated, a social media account that tracks global conflicts, tweeted images of the fire, adding: “The impact must be extremely intense as the explosions and fires in Ostrogozhsk have not stopped since early morning.”

In recent months, Ukrainian forces have launched a series of drone strikes aimed at damaging Russia's military infrastructure and oil industry.

In Voronezh, Ukrainian forces have already targeted military airfields, oil refineries and other ammunition depots.

Ukrainian drone attacks gained momentum this weekend.

On Saturday, President Volodymyr Zelensky touted a new Ukrainian drone missile that he said would bring the war back to Russia.

Mr Zelensky said the new weapon, Palianytsia, was faster and more powerful than the domestically-made drones that kyiv has so far used to retaliate against Russia.
