Sleeping teen seriously injured after suspected drunk driver crashes into New Orleans home

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – A sleeping teenager was seriously injured early Sunday (Aug. 25) when a suspected drunk driver lost control of an SUV and slammed the vehicle into the bedroom of an east New Orleans home, police said.

The accident happened around 4:02 a.m. in a house at the corner of Cerise Avenue and Chef Menteur Highway.

Family members identified the injured boy as Jamal Jackson, 15, a 10th-grader at Edna Karr High School. Relatives said Jackson was active in the school's football team, marching band and military team.

The extent of Jackson's injuries was not immediately known. Family members told Fox 8 they had not yet been allowed to see the boy in the intensive care unit, but his grandmother said Jackson is currently on a ventilator to help him breathe.

New Orleans police identified the driver of the SUV as 53-year-old Cedrick Marshall.

Northwestern police said Marshall remained at the scene of the crash and was arrested after allegedly failing a field sobriety test. Police said Marshall was also being treated at a hospital for possible injuries, but will be charged with first-degree negligent injury and reckless operation of a motor vehicle when he is taken back into custody.

No other occupants of the home were injured, police said.
